Adedamola Adefolahan (born 5 February 1996), known professionally as Fireboy DML, is a Nigerian singer, songwriter and performer. He is signed to YBNL Nation and Empire Distribution. His breakthrough single “Jealous” first appeared on YBNL Nation’s collaborative album YBNL Mafia Family (2018), and gained widespread acclaim, leading to the release of his debut studio album Laughter, Tears and Goosebumps (2019). His 2021 hit “Peru” and its international remix featuring Ed Sheeran achieved global success, marking him as one of Africa’s most prominent crossover artists.

Early life and education

Born in Abeokuta, Ogun State, Nigeria, Fireboy DML grew up in a middle-class family where his father was a civil servant and his mother a civil servant and businesswoman. He attended Obafemi Awolowo University, where he studied English Language. During his university years, he began writing songs and developed his sound while participating in music competitions.

Career

2012–2018: Early beginnings

Fireboy DML started his music career writing songs for other artists while in university. He initially went by the name DML (Damola) before adopting Fireboy DML. His early music was influenced by alternative music and Afro-life sounds, setting him apart from the mainstream Afrobeats scene.

2018–2019: YBNL Nation signing and breakthrough

After catching the attention of YBNL Nation founder Olamide through his song “Jealous,” Fireboy was signed to the label in 2018. The song was included in the YBNL Mafia compilation album and quickly gained traction across Nigeria. His follow-up singles “What If I Say” and “King” further established his unique sound.

2019–2020: Laughter, Tears and Goosebumps

His debut album Laughter, Tears and Goosebumps was released in 2019 to critical acclaim. The album, recorded without any featured artists, spawned hits like “Vibration,” “Need You,” and “Energy.” The project established him as one of Nigeria’s most promising new artists and earned him multiple awards nominations.

2020–2021: Apollo era

His sophomore album Apollo was released in 2020, featuring a more mature sound and collaborations with D Smoke and Wande Coal. The album included hits like “Champion” and “Tattoo,” showcasing his evolution as an artist.

2022–present: Playboy and international success

The release of “Peru” and its subsequent remix with Ed Sheeran marked Fireboy’s global breakthrough. The song reached the UK Top 10 and spawned multiple international remixes.
